around the intersection of market and grant avenue. the city is supposed to be marking the 107th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake in an hour. instead, the streets are shut down and no one is allowed to come out of the local businesses. this is market street right here and can you see the police cars blocking off the street while they investigate the suspicious package. no one is allowed to come out of the businesses and there is no word how it will affect the anniversary event. we will follow this breaking situation and bring you more information as it becomes available. >> the president and first lady will be in boston to attend a tribute to the marathon bombing victims. machine's explosions killed three people and wounded more than 170. at least 14 of the victims remain in critical condition. investigators say they are making progress in the research for a suspect. surveillance video shows a man dropping off a bag at the

bombing site. >> surveillance video at the lord & taylor or from local television they could be able to use facial recognition software to run that face against databases. f.b.i. agents are examining the remains of a treasure cooker recovered at the scene. the president is scheduled to leave joint base andrews at 5:20 in less than an hour. he will speak today about the first responders to the attack focusing on their heroism. >> employees of a local company are shocked to discover one their products helped detonate one of the boston bombs. >> there is a battery that is made in a company in fremont designed to fit into come pat remote-controlled cars or trucks and can only be ordered online or prepared through specialty hobby shops. the company has contacted the f.b.i. to provide information.

>> today, a vigil will honor the victims of the boston bombings in a run locally. the group responsible has plan add three-mile run, one mile for each victim killed in the attack. the run will start at 7:30 tonight on college avenue and end at snow park. runners will hold a moment silence for the victims. abc7 news will break into programming when the president visits boston this morning. he is scheduled to speak after 8:00 a.m. our time and our reporter and anchor will continue reporting on the latest developments from boston reporting live from boston at 6:30 this morning and you can follow her on twitter. >> happening right now san francisco police are investigating after they shot and killed a man accused of stabbing his brother-in-law and going after officers with a hammer. the suspect called 9-1-1 around 9:45 to report the stabbing and

the officers arrived the victim was suffering stab wounds to his head, arms arms and chest and te suspect came at him with a hammer. an officer shot the suspect to stop him and he died at the hospital. the victim suffered serious injuries but he is expected to survive. >> new this morning, police are searching if three robbers who escaped after a stunning smash-and-grab at the sun valley mall. we are there live. amy hollyfield? >> the mall was open in a bold, planned out attack they got the jewelry and they got away. this happened while the store was open. it was about 8:45 last night at the macy's in sun valley mall in concord. witnesses say three men ran in, they broke open jewelry cases with a hammer, stole several pieces of jewelry, and they ran out of the store. they were wearing jackets with hoods over their heads so police

do not have a good description of them. they believe the men got away in a toyota camry. police later found that car in pleasant hill. it, of course, was abandoned. they believe the toyota was stolen. police assume they got into another car and got away. no one saw that car. no one knows where it looks like. no one was hurt. this was quick. there was a call to police that shots were fired so they were worried about that when they got on the scene but they determined no shots were fired, it was a quick, planned out attack get manage and getting out and getting away. >> it is 4:38. happening now, petaluma police are sending if a couple in connection with a heist yesterday. the woman this this photo entered the department store, loaded two were soming carts with merchandise and placed them

>> this is the 107th anniversary of the great earthquake of san francisco, the mayor is taking action to make buildings safer signing legislation today requiring seismic retrofitting for buildings with a first floor of big windows or garages that are more likely to collapse. there are 3,000 such buildings. this comes in stages to be completed by 2020. >> at&t and south bay police are asking for your help in tracking down the vandal whose cut phone service to thousands of customers in santa clara county. abc7 news looked at the vault where a badge of cables were cut on tuesday morning south of san jose. at&t is offering a $250,000 reward for information in the case. whoever cut the phone lines is also believed to be responsible

they are taking this quite seriously after the boston bombings. this is where the city was supposed to be marking the 107th anniversary of the 1906 great earthquake of san francisco at 5:12. we were going to hear the sirens. now we are just getting word from the san francisco police department that they have moved the anniversary celebration or commemoration to union square which now starts at 5:30 so obviously they don't want to be in that area. we will continue to follow the breaking situation. >> we have more now on other breaking news. the massive explosion at a fertilizer plant near waco, texas, with five dead. the number of injured may have topped 200 already. >> abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has the latest. >> five to 15 people could be dead and more than 200 injured. the explosion was so massive that it registered as an

earthquake. it began as a fire at a fertilizer plant in west, texas, but exploded. it registered at a 2.1 earthquake and could be felt 50 miles away. it leveled 75 homes and businesses, with films -- with flames burning for hours and shooting high in the air. firefighters are among the injured and possible dead. dozens including a police official are unaccounted for. hundreds are being treated at local hospitals. a triage center was set up at a high school near the plant to treat the wounded but that center had to be moved further away for fear more explosions happening. locals described the scene of fear and chaos. >> shrapnel is everywhere.
